OpenAI announces that ETH has been disproven??? Don't panic—your Ethereum is fine. This ETH isn't that ETH 😂
Here, ETH refers to the "Exponential Time Hypothesis," a foundational idea in computer science.
🧠 What does it say?
There are some extremely hard problems that can basically only be solved by trying possibilities one by one. Every time you add a condition, the number of possibilities you have to try doubles. ETH says there’s no shortcut for solving these problems. Nobody has proven this claim in over twenty years, but everyone has assumed it’s true, and hundreds of papers have been built on it.
💥 What just happened?
An internal OpenAI model claims to have proved ETH wrong. It published a paper and a formal proof in Lean, and even invited the two scholars who originally proposed ETH to review it themselves.
I saw someone online whose paper was written on the assumption that ETH holds. Now they’ll have to take another look at it.
🤔 What does this mean for ordinary people?
1️⃣ No short-term impact—your phone, online banking, and wallet will all work as usual
2️⃣ Hard problems in logistics, chip design, scheduling, and drug discovery may have faster solutions in the future
3️⃣ Cryptography hasn’t collapsed, and Bitcoin private keys won’t be cracked because of this
But the biggest thing to watch out for is this: AI is starting to shake the theoretical foundations humanity has relied on for decades. Ethereum is fine, but computer science may be on the verge of a major change. If this is ultimately confirmed, the achievement would be worth half a Turing Award.
