On Tuesday, global sovereign bond markets faced renewed pressure again, with central banks around the world facing the dual tests of liquidity and inflation. In Japan, the Ministry of Finance’s 20-year JGB auction saw the bid-to-cover ratio rise to 4.01, while the tail spread narrowed to 0.15. Demand was still better than the average over the past 12 months (3.73x), but yields climbed to multi-year highs. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India announced that it would strongly drain liquidity from the banking system by selling government bonds, withdrawing 1 trillion rupees (about $105 billion). As a result, yields on India’s 5-year and 10-year government bonds jumped by 13 basis points and 6 basis points, respectively.

These moves not only highlight how extremely passive major non-US economies are in dealing with imported inflation, but also reflect the structural contradictions between global debt oversupply and rising funding costs. As Middle East geopolitical tensions push international oil prices higher, together with the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield breaking above the 5% threshold, global sovereign debt has been hit by widespread selling. With the Indian government facing a borrowing requirement of nearly 80 trillion rupees over the next six months, the central bank’s aggressive tightening of liquidity at this time will undoubtedly further intensify duration risk in the sovereign bond market and pressure on expectations.

From the perspective of macro financial markets, the global tightening of liquidity and rising interest rates are forming a vicious cycle. Broadly higher bond yields imply a restructuring of the risk-free rate anchor, which not only keeps increasing financing costs for global corporates, but also keeps draining risk appetite from cross-border capital. With the U.S. dollar trading at elevated levels and global liquidity tightening at the margin, various traditional risk assets face sustained downside risks at the valuation level, and downward pressure on the market should not be underestimated.

For crypto assets, the medium- to long-term negative impact from the withdrawal of liquidity cannot be ignored. With risk-free yields remaining high and central banks in different countries actively withdrawing surplus funds, the willingness of incremental capital to enter risk assets has been severely suppressed. If macro tightening triggers a deeper liquidity squeeze for traditional financial assets, the crypto market headed by $BTC may face a stage-by-stage selling-pressure test; investors should be alert to pullback risks driven by valuation pressure.
