Il programmatore ha scelto il nodo di inferenza più vicino, che sembrava la scelta giusta. Il problema è che il nodo non aveva già il modello richiesto caricato, quindi ha dovuto prima scaricarlo. Nel frattempo, un nodo leggermente più lontano era già caldo, per lo più inattivo e pronto a rispondere.

Il percorso di rete più corto è diventato il percorso di esecuzione più lento.

Quell'esperienza mi ha fatto ripensare all'infrastruttura AI distribuita. La posizione dei nodi non è solo un problema geografico. È un problema di coordinamento dove la distanza compete con la disponibilità del modello, la capacità GPU, la pressione della coda e le decisioni di routing.

Ciò che sembra decentralizzato su una mappa può comunque essere altamente dipendente sotto il profilo. I nodi in diverse regioni possono condividere lo stesso fornitore di cloud, operatore o dominio di guasto.

La sfida non è semplicemente ridurre la latenza. È bilanciare latenza, disponibilità, verifica e resilienza allo stesso tempo.

Per me, la vera prova di una rete AI decentralizzata non è dove esistono oggi i nodi, ma dove appariranno i prossimi nodi e se ridurranno realmente i ritardi e i guasti condivisi che gli utenti sperimentano.

L'elettricità una volta era un prodotto. L'accesso a Internet una volta era un prodotto. Col tempo, entrambi sono diventati assunti. La maggior parte delle persone pensa a loro solo quando smettono di funzionare.

Mi sono chiesto se l'intelligenza stia seguendo lo stesso percorso.

Ciò che mi colpisce è quanto velocemente l'IA sta passando da destinazione a dipendenza. Le persone non si chiedono più se l'intelligenza debba essere disponibile. Sempre di più assumono che lo sarà.

A quel punto, la competizione cambia.

La vera domanda non è più chi ha intelligenza. La domanda diventa chi può fornirla in modo affidabile, coordinarla in modo efficiente e renderla disponibile quando interi sistemi dipendono da essa.

È in parte per questo che OpenGradient continua a catturare la mia attenzione. Non perché renda l'intelligenza più intelligente, ma perché tratta l'intelligenza come un'infrastruttura che può essere ospitata, instradata e coordinata attraverso una rete.

Più la guardo, più l'IA sembra meno un software e più come un'elettricità.

La maggior parte delle persone non noterà il cambiamento mentre sta accadendo.

Lo noteranno quando non potranno più immaginare il sistema senza di essa.
