How to Respond When Altcoins Keep Weakening After a Prolonged Market Decline After three months of continuous weakness in the crypto market, it is understandable that holding altcoins has caused portfolios to steadily deteriorate. Most altcoins have declined more sharply than Bitcoin and show very weak recoveries during broader market rebounds. At present, capital is not flowing into altcoins but is instead staying on the sidelines in stablecoins or concentrating in BTC and ETH. Therefore, investors need to accept the reality that “holding alts and waiting for a bounce” is no longer an effective strategy. The first necessary step is to cut weak altcoins, especially those that fail to recover when Bitcoin rebounds. After that, the portfolio should be simplified to make it easier to manage and reduce risk. Holding too many altcoins only increases psychological stress and drags down overall performance. Increasing the USDT allocation to around 50–70% helps preserve capital while the market direction remains unclear. The remaining capital should only be allocated to BTC, ETH, or a small number of altcoins that clearly show relative strength. During the period of holding USDT, investors should focus on observing market structure rather than trading frequently. Key signals to watch include Bitcoin reclaiming key levels, Total2 or Total3 forming higher lows, and capital rotating back into altcoins. Averaging down on altcoins while the broader trend is still bearish should be strictly avoided. Investors should also not be misled by short-term pumps that lack confirmation from real capital inflows. At this stage, the primary goal is not to generate high profits but to protect capital. When the market truly reverses, clearer and safer opportunities will emerge. Traders who preserve capital through the downtrend always hold a significant advantage.

Swapping to USDT for Portfolio Protection Over the past three months, as the crypto market has shown clear signs of weakness, swapping a portion of the portfolio into USDT has proven to be an effective capital preservation strategy. Holding USDT helps investors avoid deep drawdowns when Bitcoin and altcoins have not yet confirmed a sustainable uptrend. Stablecoins also reduce psychological pressure during periods of sideways movement or sudden market dumps. However, swapping 100% into USDT is not recommended, as the crypto market can rebound very quickly. A reasonable allocation is to keep around 50–70% of the portfolio in USDT to maintain flexibility. The remaining capital can be allocated to BTC, ETH, or assets that show relative strength compared to the broader market. USDT exposure should only be reduced when Bitcoin reclaims key price levels with strong trading volume. At the same time, Total2 or Total3 market capitalization needs to form a higher low on the Daily timeframe or higher to confirm capital inflows into altcoins. Another important signal is when altcoins start to lead Bitcoin rather than simply following its movements. Until all these conditions are met, USDT remains the safest choice for portfolio management.

Over the past three months, Bitcoin has declined by around 31%, falling from $126k to $87k, while the total crypto market capitalization has dropped by a similar magnitude, from $4.26T to $2.95T. The fact that both BTC and the total market cap weakened by nearly the same percentage indicates that altcoins were not the primary driver of this decline. If this had been a true altcoin crash, the total market capitalization would have fallen much more sharply than Bitcoin. This suggests that capital has not exited the crypto market but is instead becoming more risk-averse. Altcoins are not “dead” but are entering a phase of strong selection and differentiation. Weaker projects with outdated narratives or lacking real cash flow continue to underperform. In contrast, altcoins with solid fundamentals and fresh narratives are showing relative strength. The market is undergoing a mid-cycle correction rather than entering a full bear market. This phase represents a period of repricing and project cleansing. Once Bitcoin stabilizes, stronger altcoins are likely to be the first to recover.
