BTC Vs ETH

Volatility and downside

Over the last year ETH has fallen more from its all time high and has a larger 1y price drawdown than BTC, which reflects higher sensitivity to risk on and risk off shifts.

BTC tends to be the first destination for institutional and macro flows and usually holds up better in broad crypto drawdowns, although both are still highly volatile.

Upside and “beta” to crypto

Because ETH underperforms more on the downside, it often outperforms during strong risk on phases, especially when on chain activity, DeFi and rollup ecosystems are growing.

BTC usually leads major cycle turns, with ETH and other smart contract platforms following later with higher beta once risk appetite expands.
