It was a choppy week for crypto.
$BTC slipped back to the $80K area and briefly dipped below it, while $ETH extended its underperformance. Here is the full weekly picture, what moved the market, and what to watch next.
The scoreboard
•
$BTC : about $80.3K
7 days: -1.5% | 30 days: -4.9% | 90 days: +24.1%
• $ETH: about $2,329
7 days: -3.6% | 30 days: -13.5% | 90 days: +21.6%
Over the past week, Bitcoin traded between roughly $79.2K and $84.9K, while Ethereum ranged from about $2,282 to $2,527. The bigger picture is more interesting: both coins are still up strongly over 90 days, but Ethereum has fallen almost three times as much as Bitcoin over the past 30 days.
What moved the market this week
1. ETF flows whipsawed
US spot Bitcoin ETFs opened the week with about $527M in inflows on Monday. Later, they saw their worst outflow since June. Even so, the week stayed net positive for the funds, which shows how mixed institutional sentiment has been.
2. Traditional finance kept building
Behind the price action, the industry kept moving forward. HSBC launched RedCoin, BlackRock filed for a Bitcoin fund with limited downside protection, and JPMorgan put its deposit token on Ethereum.
3. Solana's Alpenglow upgrade
Solana's Alpenglow upgrade was one of the week's biggest network stories, aimed at faster transaction finality.
4. Macro stayed in control
The week started in the shadow of hot US inflation data, and the market spent the rest of it waiting for the Federal Reserve's next decision.
Why Ethereum lagged
Ethereum has been weaker than Bitcoin for several weeks. In the week before this one, US Ethereum ETFs lost more money than Bitcoin funds ($320M vs $228M), and Ethereum's 30-day drop of about 13.5% shows the pressure has continued. When investors turn cautious, they tend to prefer the largest, most liquid asset, and that is usually Bitcoin.
Levels to watch (from the 4-hour chart)
•
$BTC support: around $79.2K to $80K, the area tested this weekend
•
$BTC resistance: the 25 and 99-period moving averages near $81.7K and $82.3K
• $ETH resistance: moving averages near $2,399 and $2,444
• Momentum: RSI on the 4-hour chart was about 34 for BTC and 33 for ETH. That is weak momentum and close to oversold, but not an automatic buy signal.
Levels can fail, so use them as guides, not guarantees.
What's next
The next big event is the Federal Reserve decision on October 28. Expect volatility before and after it. After hot CPI and PPI readings last week, traders are watching closely for any change in tone about rates.
3 takeaways from this week
1. Look at multiple time frames.
$BTC is down 5% over 30 days but up 24% over 90 days. Short-term pain does not erase the longer trend, and the longer trend does not remove short-term risk.
2. Bitcoin vs Ethereum matters. In a cautious market, money tends to favor Bitcoin first. Ethereum can lag for weeks.
3. Prepare before big events. Fed days bring fast moves. Keep leverage low, use a stop-loss, and never risk money you can't afford to lose.
Final thought
You don't need to predict every move. You need a plan, and the discipline to follow it when the market tests you.
