Major banks are bringing stablecoins into everyday payments: HSBC’s first Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, RedCoin, is now live on PayMe.
Announced on October 23, its ticker is RCHKD, and it is regulated under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s stablecoin issuer licensing regime (license number FRS02, approved this April). Over the coming days, more than 3.3 million PayMe users will be able to open a stablecoin wallet in the app: send money to friends and pay directly at over 100,000 merchants. Custody is handled by HSBC’s digital asset custody service. HSBC also plans to integrate RedCoin into its Hong Kong mobile banking app by the end of the year, where users will be able to subscribe to tokenized products, including new shares in a Hong Kong dollar money market fund. Note: This is a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin distributed through the bank’s own channels—not some random altcoin you can buy on an exchange.
Outlook: Bullish on the rollout of stablecoins for everyday retail payments in Asia, but don’t treat this as a signal that the price will surge now.
Do you think bank stablecoins are more likely to break into everyday payments first, or will people keep using only USDT/USDC?
