【The 2018 Me Is the AVAX of Today】
At the end of 2018, I was holding a few major coins, watching helplessly as my account went from being cut in half to being cut off at the ankles. The worst part back then wasn’t that prices kept falling—it was that they stopped falling: volume dried up, prices moved sideways, and even though they couldn’t seem to fall any further, they still wouldn’t go up. People in the community started saying, “We’ve hit the bottom,” but I just felt like something wasn’t right.
Looking at AVAX now, I see the same script playing out.
$ 9.75, down 93% from its peak. That’s a brutal drop, right? It is. But a brutal drop doesn’t mean it’s bottomed out; it only means the sell-off has been thorough. It’s moving sideways at this level, trading volume is down over 24 hours, and it’s still down over 7 days. What do you call that? “It can’t fall any further, but it can’t get back up either.”
My view is that AVAX will most likely continue to➡️ trade sideways with a bearish tilt over the next 7 days, for three reasons:
First, BTC dominance is now at 60.1%, with Bitcoin sucking up most of the market’s attention. Altcoins have no story and no money flowing in—exactly like the end of 2018. It’s not that they can’t fall any further; it’s that nobody wants to push them higher.
Second, the Fear and Greed Index is at 59. Calling that greed is pretty meaningless. Real greed was the kind of euphoria I felt last year when I went all in. This kind of “Greed” is just numbness after a prolonged drop. Don’t believe me? Take a look at your own portfolio—how many of you are actually happy?
Third, a 93% drop from ATH looks terrifying, but a low valuation has never been a reason for prices to rise. At the end of 2018, plenty of coins were even cheaper than they are now, and they still fell for months. The fundamentals haven’t changed, the ecosystem story is still the same, and there’s nothing new in the speculation narrative.
What would prove me wrong? If some good news suddenly comes out next week, or market sentiment reverses across the board and AVAX rallies along with everything else, I’ll admit I was wrong. But if none of that happens, then it’ll just keep grinding sideways.
Let’s bring this back to reality: who is hit hardest by this? The project team? They have plenty of tokens and cashed out a long time ago. Long-time spot holders? They’re already numb; a little more or a little less loss doesn’t matter. So who has it worst? The people who think “it’s fallen enough” and are getting ready to buy the dip—you’re not catching the bottom; you’re catching a falling knife. Until a real bottom takes shape, you’ll never know that it was the bottom.
After all that, am I tempted to buy? Honestly, looking at this price does make me a little interested, but I still remember that “temptation” I felt in 2017. My strategy now is to watch from the sidelines. If you’re heavily invested, consider trimming a bit while you can; if you have plenty of cash on hand, keep waiting.
What about you? How are you feeling right now? Are you brave enough to catch this dip? Share your thoughts in the comments, and I’ll post a screenshot next week to see how we did.
