NEAR: Open interest hit $1.92B. Price rejected $6
$NVDAB NEARUSDT: On October 12, NEAR's Open Interest reached a reported record of $1.92B as price approached $6 - but the breakout never came.
Instead, price pulled back toward $4.73 on October 20.
Then came the divergence:
→ October 17: NEAR price fell 2.25% while Binance Open Interest rose 6.55%.
→ October 18: Open Interest climbed another 5.69%.
More leveraged positions were building while price struggled.
But rising OI doesn't tell us whether those positions were longs or shorts. It tells us leverage was accumulating without a confirmed directional breakout.
Now there's a second variable.
On October 20, NEAR governance opened a vote to reduce maximum annual issuance from 2.5% to 1.6%, phased in over 24 months. If implemented, the proposal would reduce future dilution - but it wouldn't eliminate it overnight.
And the change still requires governance approval and validator adoption.
The real question:
Can lower future issuance strengthen NEAR's supply economics while leveraged positioning builds around a price that has repeatedly failed to clear $6?
Record Open Interest is not confirmation of a breakout.
And a proposed supply reduction is not yet a completed tokenomics change.
Two catalysts. One unresolved price structure.
