What if BitTorrent’s decentralized services could turn their own revenue into a recurring mechanism for reducing $BTT supply?
That’s the idea behind @BitTorrent’s new BTT buyback and burn program.
The model creates a simple loop:
Revenue → Buyback → Burn → Reduced circulating supply
Here’s how it works.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗨𝗘 𝗣𝗜𝗣𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘
Starting in Q3 2026, BitTorrent says 100% of revenue generated by its decentralized services will be allocated toward quarterly BTT buybacks. The program is designed to use operating revenue rather than treasury reserves or new fundraising.
The purchased BTT is then sent to a burn address, permanently removing those tokens from circulation.
𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠?
This is where the mechanism becomes more interesting.
BitTorrent’s decentralized-services ecosystem includes services such as BitTorrent Speed, while BTTInferGrid is expected to add decentralized AI inference as another revenue-generating service.
So the potential cycle is:
→ More decentralized services
→ More real usage
→ More service revenue
→ More BTT purchased
→ More BTT burned
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧
Q3 2026 is the starting period for the first batch of buybacks.
The corresponding burn and disclosure are scheduled for mid-October 2026. BitTorrent says the report will include:
→ Total BTT burned
→ Percentage of total supply affected
→ On-chain transaction hash
That transparency is important because the community won't have to rely solely on an announcement. The burn can be checked on-chain.
And there is an important distinction:
The program has been announced, but the final Q3 burn amount is not known yet.
That number will depend on the actual decentralized-service revenue generated during the quarter.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗽𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘
The interesting part isn't simply the word “burn.”
It's the connection between network activity and the BTT economy.
If decentralized services generate more revenue, the buyback pool can potentially become larger.
If that revenue continues across future quarters, the mechanism can continue operating as well.
That makes the long-term question much bigger than “How much BTT gets burned?”
The real question is:
How much economic activity can BitTorrent’s decentralized infrastructure generate over time?
That is what will ultimately determine how meaningful this buyback-and-burn model becomes.
