Ledger changes the game and announces “Atom,” its own smartphone with cryptographic security
The radical evolution of hardware wallets
#Ledger has taken an unexpected turn in its security strategy, announcing the development of the Ledger
#ATOM , a device that combines the functionality of a conventional smartphone with the highest level of protection for digital assets. Its launch is scheduled for mid-2027.
A hybrid of smartphone and cold vault: Atom runs on the Android operating system, allowing users to run everyday apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok, while also integrating the OpenClaw AI assistant—all while switching to a dedicated protected mode for managing cryptocurrencies.
A direct response to the
#Hacked massive supply-chain breach: The announcement comes amid the fallout from a security breach involving Malaysian distributor CryptoBilis, where tampered devices containing hidden chips managed to intercept 24-word recovery phrases by reading screen signals, resulting in estimated losses of $93.2 million and the freezing of 10 million USDT by Tether.
Layers of security: To counter screen-interception attacks, Atom will include the “Core” protective case, independent sensors with their own battery to detect attempts to open the device (even when it is switched off), and tamper-proof packaging.
Direct sales, with no middlemen: To secure distribution against incidents similar to the one involving CryptoBilis, Ledger will sell the device exclusively through its official website.
The Solana precedent: The idea of a phone focused on Web3 is not new (following in the footsteps of
#solana ’s Saga and Seeker phones), but Ledger’s approach starts with the foundations of traditional cryptographic security and transforms them into an everyday device.
