Bitcoin cleared $86,000 on Sept 21 for the first time since January, and most coverage focused on the price. The more useful number that day was $82,225, the average cost basis of US spot ETF holders. Those holders got back to breakeven for the first time in eight months. The move wasn't patient spot buying. About $750M of shorts were liquidated as $82,000 gave way, per CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk. Forced buyers did the lifting.
