I think many of you have already heard about the “hack” of BONK for $20M. But the most interesting part here is not the amount itself, but how it happened.
📖 If as briefly as possible:
• A person bought BONK tokens for about $4M, which gave them the right to participate in DAO votes.
• Then an initiative was created... to transfer the same wallet $20M in tokens $BONK
⏳ The proposal hung around for about a week, but practically nobody noticed it. Judging by how the token holders acted, they simply didn’t care.
After that, the author of the proposal voted with their tokens, gathered the required number of votes, and legally received those $20M.
🤔 In essence, calling it a “hack” is hard to do. The person simply used the rules that were built into the system. The real problem here isn’t the hack—it’s the complete lack of oversight over DAO governance.
💭 What’s most interesting is that, according to many people, even not $4 M, but just a few hundred thousand dollars could have been enough for such a maneuver.
Another reminder that poorly designed governance can be more dangerous than any hacker. 👀
