Archive of Fate: From Internal Testing to Public Launch One of ARPA Network’s most significant milestones this fall was the official launch of Archive of Fate, an AI-powered fate simulation game combining interactive storytelling, human decision-making, and cryptographically verifiable randomness. Archive of Fate explores a different approach to AI-driven gaming. Rather than relying entirely on predetermined story paths or opaque random outcomes, the game combines AI-generated narration with choices made by players and randomness powered by ARPA Randcast. Players navigate their own unfolding stories, make decisions that influence their journeys, and permanently record their outcomes through inscriptions. Randcast provides a verifiable source of randomness for the experience that enabling unpredictable events to be generated through cryptographic infrastructure rather than depending solely on opaque, application-controlled randomization. The result is an interactive experience that demonstrates how AI storytelling and verifiable randomness can complement one another. The launch represents an important milestone for ARPA’s broader technology ecosystem. By integrating Randcast into an accessible, consumer-facing application, Archive of Fate offers a practical demonstration of how decentralized randomness infrastructure can power engaging experiences beyond traditional on-chain lotteries and gaming mechanics. About ARPA ARPA Network (ARPA) is a decentralized, secure computation network built to improve the fairness, security, and privacy of blockchains. The ARPA threshold BLS signature network serves as the infrastructure for a verifiable Random Number Generator (RNG), secure wallet, cross-chain bridge, and decentralized custody across multiple blockchains. ARPA was previously known as ARPA Chain, a privacy-preserving Multi-party Computation (MPC) network founded in 2018. ARPA Mainnet has completed over 224,000 computation tasks in the past years. Our experience in MPC and other cryptography laid the foundation for our innovative threshold BLS signature schemes (TSS-BLS) system design and led us to today’s ARPA Network. Randcast, a verifiable Random Number Generator (RNG), is the first application that leverages ARPA as infrastructure. Randcast offers a cryptographically generated random source with superior security and low cost compared to other solutions. Metaverse, game, lottery, NFT minting and whitelisting, key generation, and blockchain validator task distribution can benefit from Randcast’s tamper-proof randomness. Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of how games are created. Much of the early attention has focused on the most visible applications: AI-generated dialogue, character art, environmental assets, music, quests, and dynamically written stories. These tools can help developers produce richer worlds while giving players experiences that would be difficult to script manually. But the more important shift may come when AI moves beyond creating game content and begins influencing game logic itself. Imagine an AI system that determines how non-player characters react to you, decides which events appear in your world, adapts a game’s difficulty to your behavior, generates rewards based on your actions, manages autonomous agents, or influences how a simulated world evolves over time. In these cases, AI is no longer simply creating something for the player to look at. It is participating in the systems that determine what happens to the player. That creates a fundamentally different trust problem. When a game is governed primarily by fixed rules, players can often develop an intuitive understanding of how the system works. They may not know every line of code, but they know there are rules underneath the experience. As AI becomes more involved in determining outcomes, those rules can become harder to see. Decisions may be generated dynamically and influenced by models whose internal reasoning is not directly observable. AI Is Moving From Game Content Into Game Logic Generative AI entered gaming largely through content creation. Developers could use models to generate concept art, dialogue, character backgrounds, environmental assets, or variations of existing content. These use cases are powerful, but they generally sit on top of a game’s underlying systems. AI-native games can go much further. A sufficiently dynamic game could allow AI to interpret player actions and decide how the world responds. Instead of selecting one of five predetermined NPC reactions, a model could create a response based on the character’s history, personality, previous interactions, current world conditions, and the player’s behavior. In simulated worlds, AI could potentially influence entire chains of events. Characters could make decisions independently. Economies could evolve. Alliances could emerge. Stories could take directions that neither the player nor developer explicitly planned. This is part of what makes AI gaming so interesting. The experience can become less like moving through a tree of prewritten possibilities and more like interacting with a system capable of continuously creating new ones. But greater flexibility also means greater opacity. The more AI influences game logic, the less sufficient it becomes to simply say that the system made the decision. Players may eventually want to know why they should trust the system in the first place. The Black-Box Problem in AI-Powered Games Traditional games already contain black boxes. Players rarely inspect a game’s source code to verify that every mechanic behaves exactly as advertised. In most Web2 games, trust rests primarily with the developer. Players assume that probabilities, matchmaking systems, reward mechanics, and backend calculations are being implemented fairly because the game operator says they are. That model works reasonably well when trust in the developer is part of the relationship. Web3 began from a different premise: important digital outcomes should not always require users to blindly trust a centralized intermediary. Smart contracts made it possible for certain rules to be executed transparently on-chain, allowing users to independently verify how assets move and how predefined conditions are enforced. Randomness quickly became one of the clearest examples of why this matters. If a game developer privately generates a random number on a centralized server, players have no independent way to know whether the result was actually random, selectively rerolled, or manipulated. This becomes particularly important when randomness determines valuable rewards, rare traits, competitive outcomes, or other high-stakes results. ARPA’s Randcast was built around this problem. Powered by ARPA Network, Randcast provides on-chain verifiable randomness through a group of nodes that jointly generate BLS threshold signatures. These signatures serve as the seed for randomness that can be verified on-chain, so players do not have to trust a single party to generate the number privately. AI introduces a related but significantly broader black box. What Trust Infrastructure for AI-Native Games Might Look Like The future of trustworthy AI gaming will probably not involve putting an entire AI model on-chain or generating proofs for every line of dialogue. Instead, verification can become selective. Different layers of a game may require different levels of trust. Low-stakes generative content can remain flexible and largely off-chain. Other systems may deserve stronger guarantees. Random draws that determine rare items could use verifiable RNG. AI decisions that allocate scarce rewards could use verifiable computation. Persistent autonomous agents handling digital assets might require proofs that certain rules were followed. This suggests that the infrastructure of AI-native games could become modular. One layer provides randomness. Another provides AI inference. Another verifies computation. Another settles ownership and economic outcomes on-chain. Rather than forcing every part of the experience into the same trust model, developers can determine which systems require cryptographic guarantees and which can remain conventional. Such an architecture could preserve what makes AI appealing — speed, flexibility, creativity, and dynamic behavior — while adding stronger assurances where fairness and value are actually at stake. Archive of Fate: One Piece of the Puzzle Today This is where Archive of Fate offers an early and tangible example. Archive of Fate is ARPA’s AI-powered fate simulation game. Players enter a random world, choose talents, and experience a life shaped by a combination of player decisions, AI-generated storytelling, and verifiable randomness powered by Randcast. The game is interesting because it brings several of these ideas together in an experience that is easy to understand. The player’s decisions matter, but the player does not control everything that happens. AI helps transform events and choices into a narrative. Randomness introduces circumstances the player did not select. That randomness is also not meant to exist as an invisible backend mechanic controlled solely by the game operator. Randcast provides a verifiable source of uncertainty, demonstrating how cryptographic infrastructure can become part of an AI-generated experience without necessarily becoming the focus of the experience itself. Archive of Fate does not mean that every AI-generated sentence or every narrative decision inside the game is cryptographically verified. Verifiable randomness solves one specific trust problem: the uncertainty shaping the experience can come from infrastructure designed to be independently verifiable rather than from a privately controlled RNG. Fairness in AI-Native Worlds AI may make games more unpredictable, personalized, and dynamic than anything that came before. But unpredictability creates a paradox. Players want to be surprised by the game. They do not want to suspect that the game secretly changed the rules. A game can be opaque enough to remain mysterious while still providing guarantees about the systems that matter. Players do not need to know what will happen next, but they may increasingly expect confidence that whatever happens was produced according to the rules they agreed to. Verifiable randomness gives us one version of that model today. Verifiable computation and verifiable AI point toward what could come next. Archive of Fate sits at the intersection of those ideas. It combines AI storytelling, human choice, and Randcast-powered verifiable randomness to explore what happens when neither the player nor the machine completely controls the outcome. For ARPA, it also serves as something broader: a practical demonstration of how cryptographic trust infrastructure can support experiences that feel creative rather than purely technical.
