Why Robot Markets Break Before the Robot Even Starts
I was bothered not by the robot work itself but by the fact that this was done by a robot that used the name FabricFND. The promise was the one that precedes the work. To do a lot of machine-economy writing, one just leaps to the step of execution, as though the difficult part begins when the robot begins to move. The section I could not keep revisiting was far uglier: one of them must think that the machine can do the job when it is not even yet assigned the initial task. The design paper of fabric has filed the over-making of refundable and working bonds in which operators place refundable bonds based on professed capacity, but the bonds are not passive staking. That is tiny when you imagine the real working process. A fleet operator appears and tells them that they can accept a given volume of throughput this epoch with their machines. A buyer would like to have deliveries, inspections, data collection or any other machine task completed in time. The network must choose who is to be selected. When such claims of capacity are easy to make, the whole market will be distorted by the time any robot can demonstrate anything. It is rational to over promise. Selection gets gamed. Whitish operators are trampled by noisier ones. Later the failures manifest themselves in the form of lost work, wasted time, fraud cases, or quality failures. The whitepaper of Fabric is excessively clear in this regard: the necessary minimum bond is proportional to reported capacity, and the choice of tasks is not only proportioned according to reservoir value but also according to the length of hold of the bond with verification by on-chain Merkle proofs.
That is the veiled bottleneck which made this project look graver to me. The initial trust issue in a robot market is not whether or not the machine can work. It is the question of how costly is it to cheat that you are able to work at scale? The difference is not just as trivial as most individuals think. Inflated claims are irritating enough already in normal markets. Poisoning of routing, pricing, uptime expectations, and readiness of other actors to develop over the system occur in a machine network due to inflated claims. When the capacity is soft, then it is everything above the capacity which is soft also. This is the reason why I believe that the framing by Fabric of the Security Reservoir is more significant than the cleaner headline stories. Registered operators are not simply entering into a network. They are publishing security against the right to belief. Misconducts that the bond can be decreased can include fraud, spam, down time and the protocol is set in a way that the punishment of possible fraud is higher than possible profit on certain tasks. That forms quite a different mental model. The tie will not be there to make holding pretty. It is available there to render false capacity costly. And the per-task design is significant as well. Fabric suggests that multiple stake transactions are unnecessary whenever a robot receives a job, offering an alternative in which the protocol can place an ear-out on part of the existing bond as collateral on a job. Many high-frequency operations can be locked on the same capital and that is a highly specialized solution of a highly specialized workflow problem. The situation in the robot market cannot be real when it is required to freeze all tasks and begin anew in order to restore the trust. Fabric is attempting to reuse trust instead of making it free. This was a turning point in my life. So far my ROBO reading was happening in the mode that many people read robotics tokens, which is as an additional effort to package machine behavior in crypto language. The further I sat on the bond design the more it was likely that Fabric was obsessed with pre-task credibility. That is a far more significant and narrower problem. In case the network is able to price belief badly, the rest of the market never cleans up enough to make a difference. When the network is able to price belief effectively, then routing, settlement and delegation begin resting on something more difficult than marketing.
And there is where ROBO loses its screwed-on quality. The utility layer that Fabric uses in those operational requirements is ROBO. It is posted as access and work bonds by operators. The token holders may delegate ROBO to increase the capacity and the probability of selection and also serve as a market-based reputation signal since the slash risk is distributed among the delegators. Meanwhile, Fabric indicates that services can be charged using terms of the stable value, to be predictable, yet on-chain settlement is still settled in $ROBO . And there is the token, right at the point where this trust problem lurks; in the price of coming to the market with credibility, scaling capacity with credibility, and settling activity with nativity. I believe it is what most readers overlook. When you add more robots to the project, it does not become interesting. It becomes even more interesting when you contemplate additional assertions of robots. That is where networks tend to become messy. Not at the demo layer. At the selection layer. At the juncture where a market must make a choice on whose promises to flow. The pressure test is self-evident though. Will declared capacity remain truthful when incentives that are real appear? Is it possible to make slashing sufficiently tight that the bond remains significant once the first wave of edge cases has been made? Does delegation increase capital efficiency and not degenerate into lazy capital hunting the largest operators by reflex? And when bond requirements are put into check with oracle-based prices, is the system robust enough to take a hit when volatility, downtime and inconsistent operator quality all strike against each other? The very nature of the design of fabric itself makes it clear that the bond requirement is pegged to a stable-value unit and is paid off in $ROBO with the aid of an on-chain oracle, which helps with volatility, but the actual test comes in determining whether such a mechanism can withstand messy field conditions, not clean diagrams. This is why this angle remained in me. The machine inability to move is not the first reason why a robot economy fails. It does not work the first because markets are not able to identify which machine operators they should trust and only later when there is movement in the markets. It seems that fabric is interesting to me in that it is attempting to make that trust surface expensive, explicit, and reusable. When that layer sticks, then the other part of the story is given an opportunity. Otherwise, the robot does not actually come.
The story of the robots remained the same thing that caught my attention about @Fabric Foundation . It was the rule drift concealed behind it. The human beings omit this step: robot work does not exhaust itself at the first payment. It breaks at the rulebook. Even after doing the same task twice, a robot will be unable to end up without a dispute due to one operator requesting a tight safety buffer, another a faster completion and the other changing the quality threshold post completion of the job. That is the most hideous process that most crypto assume. Prices, re-overs, failures, local standards, responsibility. With a deployment, which requires a human argument, which is custom, then scale kills there. What occurred to me is that Fabric is not interpreting those rules as back-office mess but rather network objects. Making pricing models, quality levels, and local operating standards selectable, audit-capable and extensible is far more significant than the headline feature. It is where $ROBO begins to become part of the design. Not as decoration. As the property of governance, a fee, and the layer of rules that machine coordination would actually be dependent on. The pressure test is self-evident though. Is it possible that such rules do not turn into slow politics? Are local standards able to remain sane rather than disintegrate the network? That is the part I'm watching.
The Midnight Problem That Starts After "Transaction Successful"
The difference that made me change my opinion was that I could see that the burden hidden in Midnight is not transmitting a transaction. It is educating the wallet on what to continue watching afterwards. That is not so big until you imagine the failure that will be revealed to the user. A DApp mints you something, or generates a new output which ought to belong to you. The sale is processed. The interface says success. But your wallet has not yet changed to what you believe you now possess. On Midnight, it is not merely a make-up sync problem. The wallet API makes it very clear that a newly minted coin must be put into the wallet by means of newCoins so that the wallet can monitor it and put it into state. Midnight also defines wallet state to also cover local zswap state, transaction history, blockchain offset, protocol version and network ID. That is, being a hold under no "browse chain data then you are finished." The wallet must be instructed what to adhere to.
That is the bottleneck that I believe most of the people jump over. On a mindset of a public-chain, a successful transfer is final since it can be discovered easily. Much of the explaining can be done by a block explorer. Midnight is bearing another burden. The wallet is balancing, proving, submitting and tracking a local state which is significant to what the user can actually do next. That is visible in the onboarding code on its own: wallet provider, midnight provider, public data provider, private state provider, proof provider, zk config provider. That is a more grave handoff issue than even most campaign posts will acknowledge. It is straightforward to envision the workflow mess which is visible. An action is performed in one of the Midnight apps. The application generates a new coin or output on behalf of the user. The developer fails to forward such an output to the watch path of the wallet. There is no pitiable appearance of being broken. There is no loud exploit. It is only a silent distrust leak. The user would have a success, and then one would have nothing changed where one would have expected it to be changed. When the actual issue is that Midnight ownership must be explicitly brought into the wallet awareness, they pre-empt the fault onto the app, or the network, or the wallet. It is quite another type of UX risk. It is there that I began to feel more important at MidnightNetwork. This is precisely the angle that the project is more concerned with since privates can never depend on the effortless public discoverability. Midnight is not just posing the question as to whether confidential computation can work. It is posing the question of whether ownership can be believable when the place of state becomes usable is not the open surface of the chain, but the wallet. The docs do not hide that. They present an example with proving being resource and time intensive, wallet states constantly evolve, and certain balances or capacities must be read in the wallet they are connected with and not determined by public indexing alone. It was the breaking point with me. I also ceased reading Midnight as privacy enhanced with superior mechanics and began reading it as a system in which asset discoverability becomes a product feature. A design job like that is much more difficult. When a user does not know what he really commands or actually commands after he or she has made a successful action, the beauty of the proof system will not save the experience. The ugly truth is brought into sight by the design of Midnight.
That was a change in my perspective towards $NIGHT also. According to Midnight docs, holding NIGHT produces DUST, and this is the resource of transaction fees. The same documentation goes on to state that not all capacity readings are exact following remittances of fees and that the linked wallet is the true source when the publicly accessible data is not able to completely indicate shielded operation. So it is not some generic utility paragraph in terms of token story. The point that the design can hit is that NIGHT-linked capacity only comes into play to a user when the wallet is able to monitor the correct outputs, the correct state and the correct spendable reality once the action has been completed. The question that I am subjecting myself to, which I keep revisiting is the question of pressure. Will Midnight be able to privatize without privatizing it? Will a normal user have faith that something created on their behalf is indeed being watched, used and brought to the top at the wallet layer before confusion becomes support debt? Since in case the answer requires too much relying on the ideal DApp implementation, then the friction is not going to vanish. It only becomes buried one layer deeper. What stayed with me is this: On Midnight, it is not the end of the job with the transaction successful. The possession yet must be manifested to the wallet.
The secret weight of Midnight was not a personal secret as I was finding irritating. Something is wrong when it is being debugged of the private state. One failed step can be blamed by an ordinary app team. There are greater hiding places of uncertainty in a Midnight app. It is possible to delegate wallet config to the Indexer, Midnight Node and Proof Server to the DApp connector. Work is partitioned into SDK components which are public data, private state, zk config, proof generation, wallet balancing, and transaction submission. Not only architecture. That is a debugging maze in case a transaction is stuck, the proof is invalid or local private state is not what the application believes it is. It is there that I began to take @MidnightNetwork as a more serious thing. The question of whether or not privacy works is not a hard problem. Whether the private apps will remain visible to be fixed without leaking the very thing that they guard is a question. Midnight appears to be interesting in that it is imposing that ugliness of a question into the working process. And there too $NIGHT gives a mechanical click. Reliability in the area of proving, routing, and recovery is what transforms the token of an abstract form of design to working capacity should holding NIGHT generate DUST which drives execution. The only thing I’m continuing to observe is that, when Midnight apps bite, is there going to be enough exposed so that teams can fix them, and not have to restart building the transparency they were attempting to avoid? The private applications do not fail in the open. That is what makes the recovery layer the actual test. #night
The issue that kept on nagging me was that privacy is dead as soon as gas appears. That is the layer people skip. You hide the asset. You fill up a gas wallet then. Then again you transfer money to keep the app running. The individual move is still covered with visible gasoline. It is then that Midnight came to seem different to me. DAUST is not gas under new label. In night it is called a shielded, non-transferable capacity resource based on an underlying associated NIGHT UTXO, whose value increases over time and is consumed using a 1-to-1 self-spend mechanism rather than transferred between participants like a usual token. I have ceased thinking of $NIGHT as the property that individuals possess. I began reading NIGHT which is the source of personal usage capacity, not some other token you continue to shuffle about so as to feed the network. In practice will such a model decrease visible leakage of fuel? Will builders use it cleanly? Can the users differentiate without the need to know the architecture? Why Midnight Feels Different When the User Never Has to Buy Gas First
The thing that continued to resonate with me was the fact that so many of the so-called easy crypto applications continue to start with the awkward request. That is the part people skip. A customer would like to sample the product. Rather, the actual product is not the initial real task. It is putting the right wallet in the right wallet with a right token so that it can be able to make the next click. The application exists, the user interface exists, the functionality exists, and none of it is important until the point when the user must undergo an additional buying and installation ceremony to have the privilege of interacting. That pause is slight enough to pass as natural and large enough to evoke the momentum of death. It is at that point where the friction begins. Many individuals discuss onboarding as though it is a UI issue. I do not think that is true. The deeper break occurs when the fuel management interrupts the experience of the product. The person is no longer experimenting with the application. They are servicing the chain. And as soon as that, the category turns out to be slimming down. Products, which aspire to be touched, become touchy. Curiosity becomes predisposition load. As a builder, one is left to sell a workflow in which utility is not determined by the initial emotional impression, but receipt overhead. The more I sat with that the more I could not help noticing how this is distorting the category. It puts apps incomplete when they are not. It compels builders to pay an additional tax on adoption prior to the actual value yet to commence playing out. It also has the effect of leading teams to the same defensive design habit, again and again: make the app simpler, decrease the area of interaction, and hope that the user will continue using the first friction long enough to get to the interesting part. The category remains small not only due to the hardness of the technology, but also because the initial contact is still requesting the user to become a network operator. It is then that Midnight began to be different to me. The aspect that resonated was not such and such privacy in abstraction. It was the decision of Midnight to attack the fuel step itself. The token page at midnight tells us that the developers can hold NIGHT to create DUST and then they can use the DUST to charge their users transaction fees thereby making it possible to have an application free at the point of usage. According to the same materials, DUST is a renewable source as a product of NIGHT, which is used in transactions and the implementation of smart contracts and is not transferable by design. That is important as it transforms the initial point of interaction. The user is no longer required to pull over and become a fuel manager prior to the usage of the app. The builder is able to take that load on to himself in terms of NIGHT-created DUST rather than burden it upon each new participant. Even the November update of the midnight network itself put it in simple terms: it is possible to give the builders claimed NIGHT to run their DApps so that a final user does not have to pay any money on a transaction just to use the application. It is an infinitely more significant design decision than it may initially appear. It transforms the process of onboarding of the network into something a lot more like a regular product entry.
I ceased to consider gas as a side mechanic and began to consider it as one of the largest untold factors that crypto products are yet to achieve a full solution. After that, I was unable to return to the simplified form of the story. I had a different initial encounter with the category. Many chains continue to charge gas friction as a cultural tax that has to be paid by users. Midnight undermines that assumption. When NIGHT produces DUST and this can be assigned to power apps to serve the needs of the users, then the ancient justification that everybody has to purchase gas first no longer seems like a physical law, but a design decision. The very NIGHT page of Midnight speaks of this as frictionless onboarding and specifically states that DUST can be delegated, but not transferred like any other property. It is there that the token began to make more sense to me as well. I have ceased to imagine that $NIGHT is the object that users simply keep in their hands and have begun to read it as the origin of an initially much more clean first experience. The token was less confusing after I observed that it was not only privacy or throughput that was the bottleneck. It was whether a builder would be able to skip the tax of buying gas prior to using the app without simulating the process. NIGHT producing DUST and DUST consumeable by the app flow and not a continuously interrupted user is a far keen token narrative as compared to generic utility language. It associates NIGHT with a highly unique repair experience in product.
I still keep some doubt here. Will builders in fact use this model to eliminate sufficient friction, or will lots and lots continue to fall back to the old crypto onboarding patterns? Will this be a benefit that the users can readily feel or is the complexity a behind-the-curtain issue that will cause a new problem down the line? And when the app pays the fuel with produced DUST, will it remain sustainable on meaningful scale with products to which the usage is high? Such questions are important since only the first encounter would last long to pass the test of demand. When this had struck a chord, I could not quite look at the category as such any longer. The actual bottleneck ceased to appear as the way in which we make users interested. and began to look like why are we keeping on making them purchase permission to test the app? Most projects concentrate on the activities that the user can do when they are funded. I continue to monitor what user is attempting to take away the funding ritual before the user makes a step.
What continued to impress me about Fabric is how quickly the initial involvement in new machine networks is ripped off the actual work and converted into paper positioning. That is the part people skip. Nothing has yet been done by a robot. No service record. No useful uptime. There is no evidence of the machine being able to support a workflow during pressure. And yet the original charge round it usually goes. Who got in early. Who owns the upside. Who makes claim to the work one hasn't made. The machine remains on the brink of activation and the entire dialogue is already losing focus and direction towards coordination and paper exposure. That is where the robot story began losing some ground on me. The layer of launch begins to teach itself the wrong lesson because early rights whose buyers were originally scarce and precious are now readily bought and sold or even traded like property. The network prevents queries of questions who is making a machine useful and puts questions of who can claim the cleanest claim over the machine before usefulness is even established. This is a misrepresentation of the entire initial stage. Work cannot keep up with attention. Positioning is made purer than contribution. And what ought to have been an inter-lacing issue is another competition to financing the first layer before the machine has made any money off it. That is when I began to feel different about Fabric. What resonated was the purposeful divide between early participation and ownership language which is deliberately created in the project. Public design of the robot genesis provides priority access weighting of participants during the first phase of operation of a robot although such units of participation are explicitly non-transferable and do not constitute a right to ownership, revenue, and/or fractional ownership. That single limitation was of significance to me, since it shifts the definition of what it means by the term getting in early. It brings the first layer nearer to coordination and more distant of paper extraction.
After that I really could not revert to the simpler form of the story. I ceased thinking of the early robot coordination as an event of market entry and began to think of it as a design decision regarding which the network wants to be rewarded first. That transformed the classification on my part. Many systems claim to desire participation, and they really let participation become a commercialized possession and then show the work. Fabric is different, as the right at the beginning is smaller. It is linked with involvement and first-stage entry, and not possession of a share of the machine. It is a very uncomfortable design indeed. Since it provokes a purer question. When the machine is not a paper asset and the right of early is not transferable, then why are you here? To assist organize robot creation as well as initial task circulation or simply to wave the initial narrative wave? It is a more difficult question to be answered honestly and this is why the building attracted my attention. It also altered my beginning reading of $ROBO . I no longer considered $ROBO as something that would make the robot launch more investable. The token was more intelligible to me after I regarded it as the rail by which the network lets the initial machine coordination be established without reducing the first layer to claims of ownership. With the framing of Fabric, the focus of network services and settlement is on $ROBO , and the initial participation layer is separated between equity, debt, profit share, and hardware ownership. That makes the token less of a scramble to paper upside and more of a system that is in an attempt to keep the first useful layer in a state of cleanliness that it will actually be a part of real work eventually.
I do not yet believe that that will ensure the design will hold. This is the section that I would continue to watch. Does the boundary between coordination and positioning remain clear when the attention becomes noisier? Do non-transferable early rights make the launch layer honest, or does the same speculation pressure seek another out? Are the first stage actually rewarding individuals who assist a robot to be made usable or is the market still learning to use the proximity to gain status prior to usefulness appearing? These questions are relevant since after this clicked, I was not able to view the category in the same light. The actual bottleneck ceased to have the appearance of early access itself and began to have the appearance of the question of whether early access can become paper noise before the machine is earning a cent. What made me change my opinion of Fabric was that I noticed how badly most stories about robots confuse two very different types of money. That is the part people skip. Boring costs are attained by a robot first. Charging. Maintenance. Routing. Uptime. Those expenses are insensitive to narrative. Then the work is sold in by such a yarn, and here the same mechanism is attempting to transfer permanent real world drag and creative attention with a single instrument. That was the place where Fabric struck me. The split is what stood out. Stablecoins facilitate the use of robots and their maintenance. $ROBO is located on the labor side, and employers pay a job. That helped to lessen the confusion of the entire design to me. It divides the aspect that requires stability, and the aspect that requires the market pricing. That also altered the interpretation of $ROBO . Not so much like something that must bear the whole robot economy on its back. Still more like the settlement layer to machine labor once the machine is already alive and operating. I continue to watch the same thing. Is that dichotomy true with increased usage? Are operating costs really maintained in their insulation, or does the ancient maladjustment re-enter? Many of the projects confuse the machine story and the money story.
