Are more transactions always better?
Tomorrow, Solana is about to take that metric down itself

The Alpenglow consensus upgrade goes live on mainnet on October 21
One of the biggest overhauls of Solana’s underlying infrastructure ever
The key change: transaction finality drops from 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds
The old Tower BFT is being retired and replaced with the new Votor protocol
The official claim: on-chain payments will feel as fast as swiping a card

The timing is pretty clever
Q3 just posted its highest quarterly transaction volume ever: 8.92 billion non-vote transactions (Allium data, October 20)
That’s up about 24% from Q2, and more than double last year’s Q4
Changing the engine when on-chain activity is at its hottest shows real confidence in its stability

But the upgrade has a side effect
Consensus votes will no longer count as on-chain transactions
Solana’s favorite metric to show off—“transaction count”—could be cut in half overnight
Going forward, we’ll need a different yardstick for TPS

Off-chain capital is telling a different story
On October 19, U.S. spot SOL ETFs saw net outflows of $6.72 million (SoSoValue data)
Money is hesitating, while development is accelerating
DeFi Development Corp added another 3,983 SOL last week
It now holds around 2.59 million SOL, adding to its position right before the upgrade

The fastest chain gets even faster tomorrow
The question is: will the market reward it with a higher price?
