Came across NPR: Prediction market Kalshi has brought on former FBI agent Sean Fern to build the company’s first anti-money-laundering team.
Fern previously worked as a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn and was involved in the Malaysia 1MDB case while in the FBI’s international corruption squad. He told NPR plainly that the goal is to make the platform harder to use for money laundering, evading sanctions, and fraud. The day-to-day work means knowing your customers, where their money comes from, and blocking transactions involving sanctioned parties.
The backdrop is rapid growth: TickerTracker estimates that Kalshi’s trading volume this year has topped roughly $260 billion—about three times its total for all of 2025. PitchBook estimates the company’s valuation at around $40 billion. Kalshi has about 250 employees and plans to double its headcount within six months. With more banks and hedge funds coming on board, the company needs to shore up compliance first.
