Storage Chip ETF in September: up 6%; the two leaders from last month both fell
The Storage Chip ETF $DRAMB 9 rose 6.08% in September, based on adjusted closing prices. After excluding non-equity positions and consolidating duplicate holdings, it held 11 companies: 7 gained and 4 fell. The gain was only half of August’s 12.96%.
The biggest gainer wasn’t the largest holding. Micron $MUB had a combined weight of 26.45%; $STXB had a weight of 4.76% and gained 11.43%, the best performance this period. SanDisk rose 11.05%, putting all three close to the 11% mark.
Performance diverged sharply at the other end. GigaDevice fell 12.83%, the biggest drop this period; ChangXin Technology fell 5.55%. On a combined, exposure-weighted basis, Samsung and SK Hynix gained just 3.27% and 6.25%, respectively. Together with Micron, the two companies account for 73.75% of the holdings.
The two major Korean stocks are the ones to watch next. Samsung and SK Hynix together make up 47.3% of the portfolio, yet their gains lagged well behind Micron’s. For the index to climb to the next level, they’ll need to take the baton. Nanya Technology, which surged 50.62% in August, and Winbond Electronics, up 40.38%, both fell in September. That suggests the whole supply chain isn’t rising in unison; I’d interpret it instead as heavyweight stocks propping up the index.
