$FIL saw a sharp rise on higher volume from October 5 to 6: Binance spot FIL/USDT climbed from around $1.05 to a high of $1.2046, and was trading at around $1.176 at 12:57 on October 6 (UTC+8), up about 12% in 24 hours and nearing the interim high of $1.2296 on September 26. From its August low of $0.6095, FIL has risen about 93%.
October 15 marks a milestone for FIL’s supply. The Filecoin mainnet launched on October 15, 2020. The genesis allocations for Protocol Labs (210 million tokens) and the Filecoin Foundation (100 million tokens) are being released linearly over six years and will be fully released by October 15, 2026. According to data disclosed by Filecoin on September 4, about 66.7 million of these tokens are released each year, alongside about 21.7 million in block rewards. After the releases end, block rewards will be the only source of new issuance, at around 22 million tokens a year. Total issuance will fall by about 75%, to a little over 2% of the circulating supply.
A reduction in issuance does not mean a reduction in circulating supply: the FIL already on the market will not decrease as a result. Future performance will also depend on whether demand for paid storage can keep pace. Products such as Filecoin Onchain Cloud are bringing paid storage onto the blockchain. FIL is still more than 99% below its all-time high of around $237 in 2021; over the same period, $BTC was trading at around $85,600, virtually unchanged over 24 hours, making this a rally specific to FIL.
