$VST has risen 5.738% over the past 24 hours, with the price reaching 151.11. An even more important number is that its perpetual contract funding rate has stayed at 0. As price rises and the funding rate returns to zero, this combination is uncommon in the derivatives market.

In most rallying markets, funding rates rise along with price because more traders are long and willing to pay to hold positions. A funding rate of zero can mean two things: either longs and shorts are perfectly balanced in both number and capital, so neither side pays the other; or the contract itself is not very active, lacking enough leveraged positions to push the funding rate higher. Given the open interest of 3166.20, the latter seems more likely. This suggests the current move is probably being driven mainly by spot buying, or by very low-leverage derivatives demand, rather than by a crowd of high-leverage longs bidding each other up.

From the perspective of macro transmission, an asset strengthening while the leverage structure remains stable usually means capital inflows are relatively cautious, or in other words, bullish money has not yet used derivatives to amplify its bet. That is not necessarily a bad thing; it avoids the rapid profit-taking that can result from accumulated funding costs. The rally may have a more solid foundation because there is less leverage froth. On the flip side, it also shows that bullish conviction is limited, and the market has not yet formed a consensus around a one-sided squeeze.

The strongest counterexample would be this: if price continues to rise, but funding turns persistently positive and climbs quickly, that would mean leveraged longs are entering the market. The nature of the move would shift from spot-driven to leverage-driven, and both volatility and pullback risk would increase. My view is that as long as funding stays near zero or fluctuates only slightly, this rally remains structurally healthy. Once funding breaks above 0.01% and stays there, I would consider trimming part of the chase-long position.

At present, $VST ’s derivatives structure is relatively clean. The next thing to watch is whether rising prices attract more leveraged longs and funding starts to move higher. If that happens, early spot buyers will become the ones being served: they can use the opportunity to reduce part of their spot holdings in a high-funding environment, selling to contract longs who are paying to hold positions.

Aggressive scenario: price holds above 151.11, funding stays at zero, and you can use pullbacks to build a small long; stop out if it breaks below 145. Conservative scenario: wait for a low-volume pullback while funding turns slightly negative (shorts paying), then look for an entry point, which would indicate shorts are starting to capitulate.
