If you’re involved in crypto in any way, this is not something you can overlook. Here’s the context: Options are leveraged positions that represent directional bets on price. Calls are structured around BTC going higher, while puts reflect expectations of lower prices. When these contracts expire, one of two outcomes occur: – They expire worthless – Or they trigger material hedging flows in the spot market With this much notional value expiring at once, a significant amount of risk is about to be removed from dealer books — which is exactly where volatility tends to originate. To put this in perspective: 2021 year-end expiry: ~$6B 2022: ~$2.4B 2023: ~$11B 2024: ~$19.8B 2025: $23.6B This is no longer a retail-driven derivatives market. We are watching institutional-scale risk unwind in real time. Why Friday is particularly important: – Dealer hedging is concentrated around major strike levels – Once expiry hits, those hedges are removed – That can send prices sharply in either direction And because liquidity is extremely thin this week — thanks to the holidays — the market is even more susceptible to outsized moves from relatively small flows.
