All eyes were on the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world's seaborne oil production and 20% of liquefied natural gas pass.
While the vital waterway has not yet been blocked, ship monitoring sites have shown tankers congregating on both sides of the strait, fearing attack or unable to obtain insurance for the voyage.
“The most tangible event affecting oil markets is the virtual shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, which is preventing 15 million barrels of crude oil per day from reaching markets,” said Jorge Leon, head of geopolitical analysis at Rystad Energy.
A sustained rise in oil prices risks reigniting inflationary pressures around the world and would also act as a tax on businesses and consumers, potentially dampening demand.
