🚨 KEPLR WALLET SECURITY BREACH: GOOGLE & APPLE LOGIN USERS URGED TO MOVE THEIR ASSETS
A major security incident has raised fresh concerns across the Cosmos ecosystem after Keplr Wallet warned users that some accounts created through Google and Apple social login may have exposed private keys.
According to Keplr, the incident is linked to a vulnerability in Web3Auth infrastructure, the third-party service supporting social-login wallet functionality.
Keplr is working with Web3Auth to protect affected assets. Users who created wallets using recovery phrases or hardware wallets are currently considered unaffected.
🔍 What Happened?
Some Google and Apple social-login wallets experienced private-key exposure and unauthorized transactions.
Keplr has suspended the affected social-login functionality.
Users are advised to stop depositing new funds into potentially affected accounts.
Remaining transferable assets should be moved to wallets created with a recovery phrase or hardware wallet, following Keplr's official guidance.
Staked and locked assets may require additional time to secure.
Some affected accounts may already display reduced or zero balances due to ongoing protective measures.KuCoin+2
💰 On-Chain Investigation Raises Concerns
An independent investigation by blockchain analytics firm Bitquery reported:
At least $6.01 million in assets held at two suspected attacker-controlled addresses.
More than 44,000 wallets drained across multiple Cosmos ecosystem chains.
Approximately 1.96 million staked ATOM moved during the incident.
These are independent investigation estimates, not a final loss figure confirmed by Keplr. Bitquery
⚠️ Important Warning for Users
If you created your Keplr wallet using Google or Apple:
Do not deposit additional funds into the potentially affected wallet.
Follow verified instructions from Keplr before moving remaining assets.
Use a properly secured recovery-phrase or hardware wallet.
Never share your recovery phrase or private keys.
Avoid unofficial recovery services, suspicious links and direct messages claiming they can recover stolen funds.
📊 My Market Perspective
This incident highlights a critical weakness in crypto wallet infrastructure: convenience does not automatically mean security.
Social login makes wallet creation easier for newcomers, but third-party authentication and key-management infrastructure can introduce additional security risks.
For the broader crypto industry, wallet security, private-key protection and user custody remain essential for long-term adoption.
The biggest question is whether Keplr and Web3Auth can fully secure affected assets and restore user confidence.
What do you think: Should crypto wallets prioritize social-login convenience or complete user control through private keys?
