Short-term holders’ balance rises to 4.08 million BTC, sparking debate|BTC falls back below $82,000|I’ll wait for confirmation rather than chase a rebound

My stance is cautious. On-chain figures are worth watching, but “holdings are rising” should not be directly translated into “4.08 million BTC in new buying today.” Binance Square’s trending topic is discussing short-term holders’ roughly 4.08 million BTC. Looking up analyst Axel Adler Jr.’s original post from October 16, this figure refers to the balance under his short-term holder metric, up about 422,000 BTC from the July 29 low. It is not a one-day net inflow, nor does it mean all these coins are in profit. The original post says the group’s average cost basis is about $74,900, with its profit buffer narrowing to around 10%, and cautions that not everyone who bought between $82,000 and $86,000 is in profit. Treating the average as everyone’s entry price can lead to underestimating overhead selling pressure from holders looking to break even.

I also checked Glassnode’s publicly available “Short-Term Holder Supply” chart. Its definition uses entities’ average acquisition dates and applies graduated weights around the 155-day mark; its latest figure does not match 4.08 million BTC. If the two metrics use different entity-clustering and age-calculation methods, they cannot be used to corroborate each other—or to simply declare one wrong—without first aligning their definitions. The real trading value of this hot topic is not the absolute balance, but its direction over several consecutive days on a consistent basis, and whether spot demand can absorb supply from older holders when prices rise. In another original post on October 19, the analyst said long-term holder supply had fallen by about 345,000 BTC since late July, but coins leaving that cohort may have been moved to self-custody wallets; it would be inaccurate to say they were all sold.

The market’s current reaction is weaker than the phrase “new money pouring in” suggests. At the time of writing, Kraken BTC/USD was around $81,901, below the day’s open of $82,002, with a rolling low of about $81,648 and a high of $83,100. This is only a market snapshot and does not prove that the price drop was caused by the on-chain article. ETF flows should not be gauged using an outdated table either: Farside’s October 19 entry is not yet complete, while the latest complete entry, for October 16, shows net outflows of about $82.4 million. The latest purchase officially confirmed on Strategy’s website is the acquisition of 250 BTC on October 12; hints on social media are not the same as a newly disclosed purchase.

The key levels I’m watching are support near $81,600 and resistance around $83,100. If BTC cannot reclaim $83,100, the 4.08 million BTC story is something to watch, not a reason to chase the price. If it breaks below $81,600 and then fails to get back above $82,000 on a rebound, my cautious short-term view remains valid. Conversely, if an hourly candle closes above $83,100 and the price holds on a retest, that would show actual buying demand is stronger than I expected, and I would need to abandon my wait-and-see stance.

If I were trading this myself, I would stay out for now and only consider a spot long, with a planned position of no more than 3% of total capital and no leverage. I would enter in two 1.5% tranches only if an hourly candle closes above $83,100 and a retest holds above $82,600. My first target would be $84,000, where I’d sell half, followed by $85,200, with a trailing stop on the remainder. After entry, if a candle closes below $81,800, I would close the entire position at a loss. If, after breaking out, two consecutive hourly candles fall back below $82,600, I would exit first as well. If the entry conditions are never triggered and price breaks below $81,600 first, I would cancel the plan; I won’t pretend that waiting has already made me money.
