What exactly is a hash, and why does blockchain depend on it?
Bitcoin uses SHA-256 to calculate block hashes and transaction IDs, and applies it twice (double SHA-256).
A hash function converts data of any length into a fixed-length output. This output is called a hash value, or digest.
When managing your funds, remember this important point: after downloading wallet software, you can check its SHA-256 checksum against the one published officially to make sure the installer hasn’t been tampered with.
