Google’s quantum chip has put Bitcoin back under the spotlight: the error rate is down 40-fold, and the old “quantum attack” debate is back in full force. Jiang Zhuoer’s latest comments hit hard: the risk is being underestimated, and around 2.7 million BTC that were lost long ago (the kind where nobody knows the private keys) could theoretically be stolen by quantum computers.

Here’s where I stand: in the short term, this is mostly emotional ammunition. $BTC just clawed its way back above 80,000, and the last thing bulls want to hear is “your coins could be stolen.” If quantum computing ever becomes practical, Bitcoin won’t be the only thing in a panic—banks and exchanges will have to rewrite their cryptographic systems too.

But don’t sleep on the long term: reusing addresses and skipping post-quantum upgrades is like leaving a back door open for attackers a decade from now.

Do you think the quantum threat will “blow up within five years,” or is it “the boy who cried wolf forever”?
