Filecoin’s storage capacity was already in place before prices surged

According to a Dell’Oro report, revenue from semiconductors and components for global data center IT grew 182% year over year in the second quarter of 2026. This surge was not driven solely by higher shipment volumes: the price per bit for DRAM and storage drives more than doubled compared with the previous year. As AI infrastructure pushes up the cost of memory and hard drives, server demand is adding further pressure to prices.

Amid supply shortages, vendors are revising quotes for new chips and storage drives. Storage costs are already climbing sharply, even before model training workloads are complete.

Procurement cycles and spot-market premiums do not affect storage capacity that is already in use.
