China is about to face a massive wave of retirements.

Research and media estimates suggest that from 2022 to 2031, an average of around 20 million people in China will retire each year—about 55,000 a day.

What does that mean? Every day, a population the size of a small county leaves the workforce.

Meanwhile, young people are still worrying about wages, mortgages, and jobs, while businesses are also facing social insurance contribution costs.

A judicial interpretation taking effect in September 2025 further clarifies that agreements in which employees voluntarily waive social insurance coverage are invalid.

Here’s the question:

Healthcare aside, young people today are paying into social insurance for decades. When they retire, what level of pension benefits will they still be able to count on?

The current pay-as-you-go system already doesn’t bring in enough to cover payments. They’d find you even if you hid in the mountains. It’s a disguised head tax. When we’re old, who will pay us?

Do you think young people in the future will mainly rely on social insurance for retirement, or on assets they’ve accumulated themselves in advance? Make sure you plan your asset allocation.
