③ Stablecoin “centralization chokepoint” risks erupt: Tether freezes THORChain vaults + Ledger supply-chain attack leads to $86M stolen ($RUNE / USDT)
Incident details
THORChain: On October 9, Tether blacklisted four THORChain vault addresses on the Tron network, freezing approximately $1.45M USDT and pausing Tron cross-chain swaps and LP operations. The freeze was lifted about 3 hours later. THORChain co-founder Chad Barraford said they received no advance notice (93% of THORChain’s Tron assets are concentrated in four vaults).
Ledger / supply-chain attack: Ledger devices sold by authorized Southeast Asian distributor CryptoBilis were allegedly tampered with (hidden SIM cards intercepted recovery phrases), resulting in more than $86M (BTC/ETH/TRON) ** being stolen; Tether froze nearly **$90M in implicated $USDT. CZ said it appeared to be a supply-chain attack involving a single distributor / counterfeit devices; former Mt. Gox CEO Karpelès also disclosed tampered devices containing hidden surveillance implants.
Why it matters
Highlights the structural vulnerability that “decentralized protocols can still be frozen at any time by centralized stablecoin issuers”; Tether has historically blacklisted more than 11,000 addresses.
“Genuine product verification” for hardware wallets cannot detect physical modifications, shaking confidence in self-custody security.
Which coins could benefit / be hurt
Bearish for RUNE (#THORChain , the native token; sentiment under pressure) and the narrative around USDT’s centralization risk (marginally).
Bullish for genuinely censorship-resistant stablecoins ($DAI, USDe, crvUSD) and asset security / auditing projects.
Price action: #Rune pulled back with the broader market (no major standalone move observed; watch for sentiment-driven pressure); USDT remains pegged to $1.00.
Key pressure / resistance levels: RUNE is mainly event-driven, with no clear token-specific technical levels. Track alongside broader market conditions and changes in protocol TVL. Over the medium to long term, the “chokepoint” debate over DeFi’s reliance on centralized stablecoins may accelerate adoption of alternative stablecoins.
Outlook: Regulators may step up scrutiny of hardware wallet supply chains; debate over Tether’s freezing powers will continue, and DeFi protocols may more actively develop multi-stablecoin strategies and decentralized settlement layers.
Related coins
USDT (Tether): A leading stablecoin with over $110B in circulation. Its contract layer allows freezing / blacklisting, and its reserves are custodied by Cantor Fitzgerald.
RUNE (THORChain): The native token of a cross-chain liquidity protocol that supports swaps of native assets; its security depends on protocol vaults.
