If you’ve just entered the crypto market and don’t have time to research hundreds of projects, you can use this screening method as a reference. (I’m also not in favor of making things overly complicated.) Experienced investors can skip this—the following is a version that ordinary people can put into practice.

Don’t rush to ask, “Which coin will rise the most?” First, consider whether a project deserves a place on your core watchlist. There are just three steps: assess its consensus, use cases, and risks.

1. First, use $BTC as a market benchmark

Bitcoin’s core strengths are its strong consensus and broad market recognition, and it’s often seen as “digital gold.” For ordinary investors, it’s better suited to gauging the overall strength of the crypto market than to fantasizing about buying every dip at the bottom and selling every rally at the top.

When watching the market, start by observing BTC’s trend and trading activity, and whether other coins are stronger or weaker than BTC. When BTC weakens, blindly chasing other coins usually doesn’t mean taking on less risk.

2. Then check whether it has real-world use

$ETH derives its value from smart contracts and blockchain infrastructure, while $BNB is tied to trading platforms and their ecosystem applications. When evaluating these types of coins, don’t look at price alone. Consider whether the ecosystem has sustained users, whether its applications are active, and whether the token has a clear purpose.

The point of this step is to replace “I heard it might go up” with “I know why the market is paying attention to it.” If you can’t explain the rationale, no matter how much buzz there is, it belongs on your watchlist.

3. Finally, identify sentiment-driven assets

DOGE is primarily characterized by its community culture and MEME appeal. Its popularity can lead to significant volatility, but when sentiment fades, the risks can grow quickly. It is driven by different factors than BTC and ETH, so you shouldn’t manage your position in it the same way.

For now, you can add these four coins to your watchlist without rushing to trade. Track their trends, trading activity, and relative strength over time, then decide whether to participate. If you don’t understand what’s going on, staying out of the market is also an option.
