Bitget hacker transfers $83 million stolen XRP; cannot be directly frozen due to network mechanism
Crypto exchange Bitget has recently suffered a security hack. On-chain monitoring shows that the attacker transferred roughly $83 million (equivalent to more than 50 million XRP) worth of stolen XRP from the initial wallet to an external address.
Because XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, the underlying network design does not provide a “freeze function” like that of stablecoins. As a result, Ripple or related institutions are unable to forcibly intercept or freeze these funds directly at the protocol level. At present, recovering the assets has become more difficult and mainly depends on major centralized exchanges monitoring and blocking incoming funds.
Bitget’s official statement says that the platform’s user protection fund is fully capable of covering the losses caused by this security incident. Customer assets are not affected, and all withdrawal services are being restored in an orderly manner. The market is closely watching where this large amount of funds flows next, to mitigate potential selling-pressure risks.
