According to the WSJ, ECB head Christine Lagarde had to step in personally to prevent the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance, from obtaining a unified European license via Greece. In the meantime, Greek officials assured the company that its application fully complied with requirements and raised no concerns. Binance even prepared an announcement of an “important event”—the company’s CEO, Richard Teng, was going to travel to Athens and take a photo with Greece’s prime minister. However, those plans ultimately did not materialize.
