Something happened again in the Middle East, but gold bulls had better be careful this time.
According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had carried out an attack on Jordan’s Azraq airbase (Beijing time July 18). In the past, the moment the Middle East started firing, gold would surge—yet the logic this time is a bit different.
What markets are truly nervous about now isn’t the fighting itself, but oil prices: regional conflict escalation often lifts the risk premium for crude, inflation expectations follow suit, and that, in turn, douses the safe-haven gold narrative with a bucket of cold water. So don’t blindly chase longs—over the short term, $PAXG may pull back and face pressure.
Next, watch two things: whether the conflict will spill over into the core oil-producing areas, and how oil prices trade during the night session. Do you think this move is “buy gold because of war,” or “sell gold because of war”?
