Trump still pursuing dual path of blockade and diplomacy, but reportedly considering run to war 🚨
We know there are discussions between Washington, Islamabad and Tehran. Proposals are being passed between them and red lines are being discussed.
The Americans are sticking to their position that they have to talk about Iran’s nuclear programme now before anything else happens. The Iranians obviously want to see the blockade lifted, which US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth today said simply isn’t going to happen.
There is the potential for talks, but Trump also said in an interview yesterday that if the Iranians attack US shipping, obviously in some concerted way, then he will blow Iran “off the face of the earth”. So, there is always the potential for an incident that leads to a huge spark that reignites the conflict.
There are also reports circulating here in Washington, DC, as well as in Israel, that Trump is considering the prospect of a two- to three-week war to try to force Iran back to the negotiating table. The Iranians will say that simply won’t work, but it’s one of the options that Trump has been briefed on.
For the moment, it seems that diplomacy is what Trump wants to pursue, along with the blockade.
