The TON Blockchain, originally developed by Pavel and Nikolai Durov, recently experienced a significant outage that has users and the crypto community worried.

On Tuesday evening (8/27/2024), the network suddenly went down and users quickly realized that the protocol had stopped processing transactions.

The disruption resulted in no new blocks being produced for more than four hours, as confirmed by blockchain explorer Tonscan.

Crypto Exchanges Respond to TON Disruption

Decrypt reported that the disruption directly affected major crypto exchanges. Binance and Bybit, two leading platforms for trading digital assets, responded quickly by suspending all deposits and withdrawals related to the TON network.

This move highlights the potential risks and challenges associated with the operational stability of such blockchains.

The network, once closely tied to the Telegram messaging platform, has faced a number of challenges over the years.

Initially introduced in 2018 via Telegram's whitepaper, TON is projected to be a revolutionary layer-1 blockchain.

The project's ambitions were supported by an initial coin offering (ICO) for its native token, Gram, which became the second-largest ICO in history.

However, the project faced a major hurdle when the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) stepped in and shut down the project as it deemed the Gram token offering to be an unregistered security.

Project Continuation and Recent Disruptions

Following SEC intervention, Telegram officially withdrew from the project in 2020. However, TON Blockchain was not left alone.

A community of developers, led by Anatoliy Makosov and Kirill Emelianenko, continued the development of the project, eventually launching the current iteration of the network.

However, this latest disruption raises questions about the long-term viability of the network.

Pavel Durov's Legal Troubles and Their Impact

The outage comes at a time when TON is experiencing increased traffic, partly due to the launch of the DOGS memecoin. Tonscan previously noted that this surge in traffic put pressure on the network, with some central services temporarily going offline.

This incident highlights the challenges that established blockchains continue to face when dealing with unexpected spikes in activity.

The matter was further complicated when Pavel Durov, one of the original architects of the network, was arrested in Paris.

Durov faces serious charges, including facilitating illegal transactions, refusing to cooperate with law enforcement, and allowing illegal activities such as child pornography, drug distribution and organized fraud to flourish on Telegram.

These legal issues add another layer of uncertainty to the future of TON Blockchain.

Telegram Re-Engagement with TON Blockchain

Despite its troubled past and current challenges, Telegram has recently begun to re-engage with the TON Blockchain.

The platform has started paying channel owners a portion of ad revenue via Toncoin (TON), the network's native token.

Additionally, this August, Telegram introduced a feature that allows content creators to earn crypto through the in-app currency Stars, which can be converted into TON or used for advertising payments.

While TON’s price has remained relatively stable, the token has fallen more than 20 percent since Durov’s arrest. Despite this, Telegram continues to grow, with its user base surpassing 950 million in July.
