What Is the Solana Program Library (SPL)?

Solana Program Library (SPL) is a collection of open-source, on-chain programs developed by Solana Labs. It provides standardized infrastructure for the Solana network.

SPL Token Program

Its most well-known component is its token program that handles the issuance, transfer, and burning of tokens across the network. This standardization ensures consistency, interoperability, and ease of integration across various applications and platforms within the Solana ecosystem.

Similar to token standards such as ERC-20 on Ethereum and BEP-20 on BNB Smart Chain, SPL serves as a blueprint for developers looking to create, manage, and deploy tokens on Solana. One key difference is that the SPL token program is a single shared on-chain program, rather than a separate smart contract deployed for each token. Because every token built on it follows the same rules, wallets and applications can support any SPL-compliant token without custom code for each one.

Key Features of SPL

Interoperability

SPL promotes interoperability by defining a common set of rules for tokens. This ensures that tokens adhering to the SPL standard can interact with Solana wallets, decentralized applications (DApps), and other smart contracts on the network.

Composability

Composability is a crucial aspect of SPL, allowing developers to create innovative and complex applications by reusing existing SPL-compliant components. This accelerates the development process and encourages the exploration of new use cases within the Solana ecosystem.

Efficiency

SPL can enhance the efficiency of token-related operations on the Solana blockchain. Smart contracts and decentralized applications can interact with SPL-compliant tokens more effectively, thanks to the standardized features and functions provided by the SPL token standard.

Token-2022

In 2022, Solana developers introduced a second token program, commonly known as Token-2022 or the Token Extensions program. It uses the same account model as the original token program and adds optional extensions, such as transfer fees, transfer hooks, non-transferable tokens, and on-chain metadata. The original SPL token program remains in widespread use, and most wallets and applications treat both programs as part of a single token framework on Solana.

What SPL Tokens Can Represent

Developers on Solana can leverage the SPL token standard to create a wide range of tokens, each tailored to specific use cases. These tokens can represent anything from fungible assets like stablecoins to unique non-fungible tokens (NFTs) such as digital collectibles. The adherence to SPL ensures that these tokens share a common language, allowing for smooth integration and interaction within the Solana blockchain network.

Adoption of the standard has been substantial. In early September 2026, Solana set a record with more than 263,000 new SPL tokens created in a single day, illustrating how routine token issuance has become on the network.
