Englischer Heiliger des 10. Jahrhunderts, geboren dänischer Abstammung, ausgebildet unter seinem Onkel St. Oda, Erzbischof von Canterbury. Wurde Mönch in Fleury-sur-Loire (Frankreich), kehrte nach England zurück, diente als Bischof von Worcester und später als Erzbischof von York. Bekannt für strenge klösterliche Reformen, tiefe Demut, Sorge für die Armen, nächtliche Wachen und das Waschen der Füße von zwölf armen Männern jeden Tag zur Nachahmung Christi. Starb friedlich im Jahr 992, während er diese Füße am Aschermittwoch - dem ersten Tag der Fastenzeit - wusch.

27 February – St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows
Confessor (Passionist)

Born Francis Possenti in 1838 in Assisi, Italy. After a worldly youth marked by fashion, theatre and duelling, a sermon on the Passion and a miraculous vision of the Sorrowful Mother converted him at age 18. He entered the Passionists, taking the name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, and lived a hidden life of intense prayer, devotion to the Crucified Christ and the Sorrowful Virgin, and joyful charity toward his brothers. Struck by tuberculosis, he died in 1862 at age 24, prophesying his own death. Canonized in 1920; patron of students, young people discerning vocations, and those suffering from tuberculosis.

“Love is proved in suffering.”

This feast shows that a short life of total surrender can bear eternal fruit — the world’s noise fades, but the pierced Heart endures.

26 February – St. Nestor the Martyr of Thessalonica
Martyr

3rd-century young Christian soldier in Thessalonica. When the emperor Maximian arrived and ordered sacrifices to idols, Nestor openly professed Christ and challenged the emperor’s champion gladiator Lyaeus, who had been killing Christians in the arena. Empowered by prayer (he asked St. Demetrius for strength), Nestor defeated and killed Lyaeus in single combat. Enraged, Maximian ordered Nestor’s execution; he was thrown to wild beasts and then beheaded. His martyrdom strengthened the faith of many, and he is venerated as a protector against enemies of the faith.

“Christ is my strength and my victory.”

This feast is a reminder that even the youngest and least powerful can become instruments of divine victory when they stand firm in confession of Christ.

Geboren um 710 in England, Tochter von St. Richard dem Pilger und Schwester von St. Willibald und St. Winibald. Sie schloss sich der Benediktiner-Mission nach Deutschland unter ihren Brüdern an, wurde Äbtissin von Heidenheim (dem ersten Doppelkloster für Männer und Frauen in Deutschland) und war bekannt für ihre Heilungsgaben, ihre Fürsorge für die Kranken und ihren Schutz gegen Hunger und Pest. Nach ihrem Tod im Jahr 779 floss aus ihrem Grab wundersames Öl (bekannt als „Walburgas Öl“), das jahrhundertelang für Segnungen und Heilungen verwendet wurde. Schutzpatronin gegen Husten, Hunger, Pest und Stürme auf See.

Chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot among the Twelve (Acts 1:15–26), St. Matthias was a disciple from the beginning who had witnessed the Lord’s ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension. Tradition holds he preached in Judea, then in Cappadocia, Ethiopia or Colchis, and was martyred (stoned then beheaded) around 80 AD. One of the lesser-known apostles, his feast reminds us that God calls ordinary faithful witnesses to fill gaps in His plan — no role is too small when it serves the Kingdom.

23 February – St. Polycarp of Smyrna
Bishop & Martyr

Disciple of St. John the Apostle, friend of St. Ignatius of Antioch, and one of the three chief Apostolic Fathers (with Clement of Rome and Ignatius). Bishop of Smyrna in Asia Minor for many decades, he was a living link to the apostolic generation. At age ~86 he was arrested during the persecution under Antoninus Pius (or Marcus Aurelius). Refusing to burn incense to the emperor and curse Christ, he declared: “Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He never did me any wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?” He was burned at the stake, but when the flames did not consume him, he was stabbed. His martyrdom letter (Martyrdom of Polycarp) is one of the earliest non-biblical Christian documents.

“Be strong and increase in the Lord.”

This feast honours steadfast fidelity to Christ unto death — a powerful witness that truth and charity do not bend under pressure.

Feast

The celebration of the apostolic authority given to Peter by Christ: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church” (Mt 16:18). The “Chair” symbolizes the teaching office of the Bishop of Rome, successor of Peter, as visible head of the universal Church. Early Christians venerated Peter’s teaching seat in Rome; the feast is attested from the 4th century and was fixed on this date in the Roman calendar.

The feast underscores unity, authority, and fidelity to the See of Peter amid trials. The Chair itself (ancient wooden relic encased in Bernini’s bronze throne in St. Peter’s Basilica) is carried in solemn procession in old Roman tradition.

In times of confusion or division, the Chair reminds us: the rock holds firm, the successor guards the deposit of faith.

Bishop & Doctor of the Church

11th-century reformer, cardinal, monk, and one of the greatest spiritual writers of the Middle Ages. Born poor in Ravenna, orphaned young, raised by his brother, he entered monastic life at Fonte Avellana and became prior, founding several hermitages. Appointed cardinal-bishop of Ostia by Pope Leo IX, he fought simony, clerical marriage, and corruption with fearless zeal, writing powerful treatises and letters. Called “the scourge of simoniacs,” he helped restore the moral authority of the papacy during a turbulent era. Died 1072. Proclaimed Doctor of the Church in 1828.

“Live in such a way that you fear no one but God alone.”

This feast reminds us that true reform begins in the heart — personal holiness first, then courage to speak truth in love, even when it costs everything.

Born c. 1290 in noble family in Piacenza, Italy, Conrad accidentally set fire to woods while hunting, blamed a poor man, and allowed him to be punished. Struck by remorse, Conrad sold his possessions, gave the proceeds to the poor and to the innocent victim’s family, then fled to a hermitage. Later he joined the Third Order of St. Francis, lived as a hermit on Sicily for 36 years, subsisting on herbs, and was gifted with miracles and prophecy. He died 1351.

“Repentance is the beginning of salvation.”

In 1858, at age 14, Bernadette saw 18 apparitions of the Immaculate Virgin Mary in the grotto of Massabielle, Lourdes. The Lady asked for penance, prayer for sinners, and a chapel; she revealed herself as “the Immaculate Conception” and directed Bernadette to the healing spring. Despite mockery, poverty, and illness, Bernadette remained humble and truthful. She entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, lived in obscurity, and died in 1879 at 35.

“I am the Immaculate Conception.”

In the 3rd century during Claudius II’s persecution in Rome, Valentine (a priest) secretly married Christian couples against the emperor’s ban on marriage for young men (to increase army recruits). He was arrested, imprisoned, and while in jail he healed the jailer’s daughter of blindness. He was martyred by beheading on February 14, 269. Before execution he wrote her a note signed “Your Valentine.”

Born 1641 in France, Jesuit priest Claude was sent to Paray-le-Monial where he became confessor to St. Margaret Mary during her revelations of the Sacred Heart. He authenticated her visions, promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart, and suffered greatly for it (imprisonment, exile, illness). He died 1682 at 41, having offered himself completely to the Heart of Jesus.

Fatima-Gnaden für den Tag:
- Bete einen vollständigen Rosenkranz (oder mindestens ein Jahrzehnt) für Frieden und Umkehr.
- Biete ein kleines Opfer oder eine Handlung der Sühne für das Unbefleckte Herz an.
- Weiht (oder erneuert) euren Tag/eure Familie dem Unbefleckten Herzen Mariens.
- Schnelle Handlung: Zünde eine Kerze an und sage das Fatima-Gebet: „O mein Jesus, vergib uns unsere Sünden…“

Unsere Frau von Fatima, bete für uns, damit wir Frieden in unseren Herzen und in der Welt erlangen.
