#GrayscaleAcquires510KHYPEForStaking

On chain analytics platform Lookonchain reported on May 20, 2026, that two Grayscale linked wallets bought and staked a combined 510,387 HYPE tokens over the past week, with the holdings valued at approximately $24.95 million.

The on chain move is one layer of a deeper institutional play. Grayscale, managing roughly $35 billion in digital assets, has already filed an S-1 registration statement with the SEC for a spot HYPE ETF targeting a Nasdaq listing under ticker GHYP, with Coinbase Custody as the primary custodian.

Grayscale subsequently amended the filing to incorporate HYPE staking, renaming the proposed fund the Grayscale Hyperliquid Staking ETF, with Anchorage Digital Bank as custodian and Bank of New York Mellon as administrator and transfer agent.

The competitive landscape is intensifying: Bitwise and 21Shares have also filed for HYPE ETFs, creating a three way institutional race. Hyperliquid currently commands weekly derivatives trading volume exceeding $50 billion, with 24 hour fee revenue reaching $1.6 million making it one of the most revenue generative DeFi protocols in the market.

The institutional momentum has helped HYPE reclaim the $50 level for the first time in approximately eight months, aided by expectations of spot ETF launches and a short squeeze.

💡 Beginner's Corner Why Does a Staking ETF Differ From a Standard Crypto ETF?

A staking ETF goes beyond passive price tracking by participating in the network's validation process, the fund can generate yield for shareholders, making the product structurally more appealing than a pure exposure vehicle.

However, the inclusion of staking could invite additional regulatory scrutiny, given ongoing SEC debate about whether staking rewards constitute securities yields a question that remains unresolved for altcoin ETF structures.

💬 Does Grayscale's $25M on chain stake in HYPE combined with a three way ETF filing race signal that Hyperliquid has crossed the threshold from DeFi protocol to institutional grade infrastructure? Or is this purely momentum driven positioning?
