Hamid Reza Gholamzadeh, director of the Tehran-based think tank Diplohouse, says the future of US military bases in the Gulf could become a major issue for Iran, which is likely to push for their closure.
Gholamzadeh argued such bases would “always be a threat to Iran” and their removal could serve as a “real guarantor” of regional security.
“Of course, it’s not the only factor, and the Americans don’t necessarily need these bases to attack. They can attack Iran from other places as well, but that would be much more difficult,” he said.
Gholamzadeh said that closing US bases in the Gulf is “not something unreachable” and could pave the way for stronger cooperation between Iran and its Gulf Arab neighbours.
