YGG SHUTS DOWN GAME PUBLISHING ARM, PIVOTS TO AI DATA
Yield Guild Games has confirmed the closure of YGG Play, its Web3 game publishing division, cutting 35 jobs in the process. Co-founder Gabby Dizon called it "a market decision, not a product decision," pointing to the prolonged crypto downturn and a similarly brutal traditional gaming market as the reasons behind the shutdown.
The unit's website, launchpad, and games — including LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper — will go offline by August 1. Two partnered titles, GIGACHADBAT and Ragnarok Breaker, will continue under their original developers. Despite the closure, YGG Play wasn't a failure on paper: it crossed $9 million in lifetime revenue and partnered with brands like Pudgy Penguins before the market turned. YGG is redirecting resources into a new business — supplying gaming behavioral data to AI labs for model training.
What this means:
Another sign of the crypto gaming sector's struggles — even profitable-on-paper units aren't surviving the downturn
YGG's pivot to AI data (via its new "AI Alerts" initiative) reflects a wider industry trend of crypto firms chasing AI revenue instead
Treasury of $20.6M gives YGG roughly 4 years of runway post-restructuring, so the core organization isn't going anywhere
Affected staff get 8 weeks of extra pay plus job placement help
Is this the right move for YGG, or a sign the whole GameFi thesis needs a rethink? Let me know your take.
