#USPostQuantumCryptographyDeadline2031

President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14409, "Securing the Nation Against Advanced Cryptographic Attacks," to urgently accelerate the U.S. transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC).

This mandate addresses the national security threat of "harvest now, decrypt later" attacks, where adversaries stockpile encrypted data to decrypt it once future quantum computers become capable of breaking current encryption (like RSA and ECC).

The order sets binding, accelerated deadlines for federal agencies to migrate "high-value assets" and "high-impact systems" to NIST-approved PQC standards:   December 31, 2030: Deadline for PQC adoption in key establishment.   December 31, 2031: Deadline for PQC adoption in digital signatures.

Agencies must designate migration leads within 30 days and provide detailed transition plans. The mandate also impacts federal contractors, who must comply with these new NIST standards by the end of 2030. This initiative marks a significant shift, turning quantum-resistant security into a concrete federal compliance requirement.
