The MetaMask is broken

Here’s the reason.

Your favourite Ethereum wallet (Metamask) and Bitcoin wallet can’t prepare for the future.

They rely on the elliptic curve signature (ECDSA) that quantum computers can one day decrypt in minutes. In fact, if you send an Ethereum transaction, the public key will be exposed to the chain.

This means that most ETH are sitting behind an ECDSA key that anyone can potentially recover with Shor’s algorithm. This is not paranoia, but mathematics. Powerful quantum computers will “break” your wallet by shattering today’s cryptography. The good news is that Post Quantum Crypto (PQC) exists to solve this approved by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

However, until the wallet is switched to the PQ-safe algorithm, Ethereum/BTC wallets similar to MetaMask are theoretically vulnerable to future quantum hacking. Investors and builders should pay attention to this warning: the era of the never-backward Web3 is coming to an end, and the wallet must be upgraded before Q-day.
